How It’s Made: The Factory Tour Capital of the World
Find out why Pennsylvania is home to the Factory Tour Capital of the World this summer by visiting the South Central region of York and York County. With three of the biggest snack food companies in the United States, Hershey nearby, and the motorcycle powerhouse Harley-Davidson, historic York is still making it into the history books with more than a dozen year-round factory tours of our favorite brands.
If you’re a salty snack super-fan, then start planning your York excursion now. York has all your favorites, with year-round tours of the UTZ Quality Foods, Snyder’s of Hanover, and Martin’s Potato Chips factories. Get a behind-the-scenes look at the machinery, robotics, and manufacturing that is dedicated to bringing you that delicious bag of chips. Whether it’s the sting of salt & vinegar or the summery sweetness of BBQ, we’ve all bought the “Family Size” when shopping for ourselves at least once, and learning about the history and creation of these great snacks shows just how much we appreciate those Sunday chips-and-a-movie nights on the couch.
The Sweetest Place on Earth is just a half hour drive away from York, and touring Hershey’s Chocolate World is one of the region’s most popular and beloved attractions. Besides the epic candy store at the end, you’ll discover all about Milton S. Hershey and how constructed a candy empire that would eventually create such monuments as the Hershey Hotel, Hershey Gardens, Hersheypark, and, obviously, the world-famous town of Hershey. We will certainly never forget his name. But, seriously, the man did a lot of good for this world, even excluding the invention of the most delicious candy on the planet.
If chips and candy aren’t really your thing, maybe motorcycles are. York is home to the Harley-Davidson Vehicle Operations factory which assembles the Touring, Softail, CVO, and Trike models as well produces the frames, fuel tanks, and fenders for the iconic motorcycles. Take a classic factory tour or the more intimate and personalized Steel Toe Tour for smaller groups. Visit the Harley-Davidson website for more information.
