Flames Across the Susquehanna
In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the burning of the mile-long covered bridge that spanned the Susquehanna River between Columbia and Wrightsville, Rivertownes PA USA will create ceremonial fires atop the 25 piers that once supported the span. The destruction of the bridge thwarted the eastward movement of Confederate soldiers bent on marching into Lancaster County and routed them westward towards Gettysburg. Prior to the dusk ceremony, the Susquehanna Travelers, a troupe of Civil War musicians, will entertain on the grounds overlooking the piers. Lighting of the piers will be accompanied by a narration of the events that led to this action. Fireworks are scheduled for 10:00pm. Rain Date: Saturdays, June 29, 2013.
