Take A Hike: Explore PA Outdoors

Getting outside is probably the best reason to be in Pennsylvania for the summer. Whether you’re a temporary visitor or a long-time resident, Pennsylvania will remind you of the breathtaking beauty of Mother Nature. With a unique landscape consisting of mountain ridges, deep river valleys, and endless forests, the network of trails that run throughout Pennsylvania allows us to experience the essence of what it means to live in “Penn’s Woods.” Visit one (or more) of these unique trails for breathtaking views and plan a day trip (or an overnight at a nearby bed and breakfast) to explore these unforgettable locations today.

Turkey Path

Turkey Path is one of the best hikes for exploring Pennsylvania’s Grand Canyon, a National Natural Landmark. Located in Leonard Harrison State Park, the 1.7-mile trail descends all the way to the bottom of Pine Creek Gorge. This trail is not recommended for novice hikers due to steep grades and rugged terrain. Below is a link to get you started.

Peter's Mountain

Part of the Appalachian Trail, Peter’s Mountain is a challenging, steep, and rocky climb along switchbacks to reach the summit, but the reward of breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and the Susquehanna River make it more than worth it. Keep in mind this is a strenuous hike that involves scrambling over rock formations, particularly along the mountain’s summit.

High Rocks Trail

Head to Bucks County for the High Rocks Trail; you can find its two trailheads at Tohickon Valley State Park and Ralph Stover State Park. Either way, you’ll come across High Rocks Vista, situated atop 200-foot-tall cliffs overlooking Tohickon Creek. If you’re in for more adventure, plan a rock climbing adventure instead of a hike.

Trout Run

This easy two-mile out-and-back trail in Lancaster County is perfect for families. Birds, waterfalls, and short hills (as well as the short length) along this trail will entertain children with short attention spans while introducing them to the wonders of hiking and the beautiful natural world of Pennsylvania.

Great Allegheny Passage

Start in downtown Pittsburgh’s majestic Point Park for the 150 miles of the Great Allegheny Passage which will take you all the way to Washington DC. Biking and hiking are the two most popular activities along the trail but sections are also open to equestrians. Fishermen and bird watchers also recreatioinally use the trail. Along the way, enjoy the breathtaking Laurel Highlands and the 20,000-acre Ohiopyle State Park as you journey through the coke, coal, mining, and steel-making corridors.
