The Road from Appomattox
A co-production with Totem Pole Playhouse, the Majestic Theatre in downtown Gettysburg presents Richard Hellesen’s The Road From Appomattox in its first production outside of Washington, D.C. from July 10 to July 21, 2013.
Much has been written by about Lee and Grant at their first meeting at the Appomattox Courthouse, but very little is told of the second meeting of the two Generals a day later. Originally commissioned by the Ford’s Theatre Society, this Civil War one act drama captures the patriotism and compassion of two of American Civil War’s most intriguing figures. The Road From Appomattox explores how two great and very different generals ended the war with mercy and the best interests of the country in mind. Performances: Wednesdays at 2:00pm & 7:30pm; Thursdays at 2:00pm & 7:30pm; Fridays at 7:30pm; Saturdays at 2:00pm & 7:30pm; and Sundays at 2:00pm. For tickets call 717-337-8200 or visit the website.
The Majestic Theatre was fully restored to its original 1925 Colonial Revival splendor in 2004. Restorations included: decorative pressed tin ceiling, stained glass chandeliers with crystal decorations, elaborate stage draperies, deep plush patron seating with cast iron end standards, and custom-woven carpets in thick wool pile. It is a must see to fully appreciate this theatre.
